Paris in the morning then Egypt

After a short night, we had an early breakfast with Albert and Sylvia because they had to catch a morning flight back to Munich.  Kim Neaf (an ex ICS employee) and his son, Ryan, joined us.  Kim moved to Paris four years ago so his wife could be close to her family.  It was a pretty spring day so we went for a walk on the Champs Elysees and tried to catch up with what we both had been doing for the last 5 years.  Then Kim took us to the top of the Arc de Triomphe for a great view of the city.  We definitely got our exercise today - 284 steps just up to the inside gallery.  From up here the major streets radiate out like spokes of a wheel.  The modern Paris and wide avenues we see today were laid out in the 1850s by Baron Georges.  Then back to the hotel to catch a taxi to the airport and our flight to Cairo.  The flight was a quick four hours then a long ride across Cairo to the Movenpick Hotel in Giza.  Traffic here is chaotic, people don’t drive in their own lanes.  When we were landing the area around the airport was flat, sand colored with groups of 2-6 story apartment buildings.  No trees or greenery anywhere, just sand and roads.  Our guide says Egypt has 90 million people, 80 million of them living along the Nile river.  Kathy likes the mosques, the sound of the call to prayer we heard in the airport parking lot (hear the video) and other old Egyptian monuments we saw on the way to the hotel.  Not too thrilled about the several military guard points and white uniformed solders with AK47s.
