Finally we had broadband in the room and could get caught up on the internet including iChat with Carol and an internet call to Mary El before checking out of our motel in Ballarat and a good breakfast at the Pancake Kitchen. This is the first pancake place we have seen on our trip. We took lots of pics in Ballarat - Australia’s largest inland city in the South - created by the large gold rush starting in 1851. It has a wonderful collection of 1860-1890 era buildings with their wrought iron facades plus some modern day structures and a wide divided main street. A lot of the gold money was spent on building out the town and churches in the late 1800s. We then went to Sovereign Hill - a genuine (re-created) gold mining town - for the rest of the day. The hit of the day was the pouring of a 100 oz gold bar that Kathy did not want to give back to the goldsmith when she learned it was worth over $58,000 followed by a tour of a real gold mine under the hill. Late in the afternoon we drove further West to Halls Gap, a very small town at the base of the Grampian Mountains. VIC 3381 for you following us on Google Earth. When we arrived at dusk, there were dozens of kangaroos grazing in the field behind the motel. It was too dark for pics.
