The Grampians

Woke up to a sunny day in Halls Gap.  Walked over to the breakfast room and the kangaroos were still out in the field.  After breakfast we drove up to the Boroka and Reed Lookouts before going on to the MacKenzie Falls.  You can see the motel we stayed in last night from the Boroka Lookout.  The Grampians had a huge fire in January that covered over 135,000 hectares (just under 300,000 acres).  The area is just starting to recover-green shoots and leaves are on a lot of the trees.  The government of Victoria has done a lot to help restore the area as tourism was its major industry.  Several of the Grampians major spots were damaged and the government was just reopening Mackenzie Falls today with a visit from Victoria’s Deputy Minister, John Thwaites.  The place was spotless with all of the burned out facilities now replaced, walks swept and new signs in place.  He got the royal treatment, a tent with food and drinks, press  coverage and a guided tour down to the falls.  Jerry bummed a cup of coffee from the party while Kathy discussed the fire and local birds with some of the local forestry people.  Kathy says you had better like the pictures of the falls as she is not going to walk up over 205 steps again to redo the pictures.
We spent the afternoon driving over 450 km from the Grampians to Adelaide.  The trip was across flat, dry, brown farm land with only occasional dust swirls to relieve the boredom.  Reached adelaide at sundown.
